Here at Boom Create, prising ourselves away from our screens is a rare occasion, and is primarily reserved for instances of food, beer or sleep. This time however we ventured outside our studio and into Brighton’s thriving metal scene to watch upcoming local act ‘Black Peaks’ perform the final gig of their album release tour at the Haunt. With the recent press these guys have had from the likes of Zane Lowe and Annie Mac, coupled with the fact that the album had only launched the day before, and they were playing to a home crowd, needless to say we were excited.
We were not disappointed. The set was a furious blast of energy with perfect timing and vocals that send shivers down your spine. It’s hard to put a finger on what they sound like, as they seem to perfectly blend so many of our favourite bands together to create something completely fresh. Imagine that Deftones meets Between the buried and me in a pub, someone puts Royal Blood on the jukebox, and they all discuss its merits but in a slightly patronising tone. Then Mastodon walk in, they all have a fight, then make up and cuddle, share a few shots of Jagermeister, and proceed to start a band.
Go listen. Go watch. And do it soon, while Black Peaks are still on playing on stages small enough that you can high five them as they walk off stage.
